Data covering the first quarter of 2023 found wind and gas were the two largest contributors to Britain&#8217;s electricity mix, providing 32.4 per cent or 24TWh and 31.7 per cent or 23.4TWh, respectively. Wind power&#8217;s share rose by three percentage points year-on-year, while gas&#8217; share fell by five percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>According to energy giant Drax, which runs the Electric Insights series of reports, the performance marks the first-time wind has provided the largest share of power over the course of a three month period. Moreover, almost 42 per cent of Britain&#8217;s electricity came from renewable sources during the first quarter with biomass, solar, and hydro generating 5.7 per cent, 2.3 per cent and 1.5 per cent of the grid mix, respectively. In contrast, fossil fuels supplied 33 per cent of the mix with coal and oil providing marginal amounts of power alongside gas. The remaining mix was supplied by imports from abroad and nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>According to Dr Iain Staffell of Imperial College London, lead author of the quarterly Drax Electric Insights report series, the latest figures offer further evidence that a renewable power revolution is underway that has seen the UK almost completely end its use of coal power in the space of a decade. &#8220;There are still many hurdles to reaching a completely fossil fuel-free grid, but wind out supplying gas for the first time is a genuine milestone event and shows what can be achieved when governments create a good environment for investors in clean technology,&#8221; he said. Bruce Heppenstall, Drax Power Station plant director, added that the &#8220;remarkable achievement&#8221; comes at a time when cutting the use of foreign gas is critical to national energy security.<\/p>\n<p>The release of Drax Electric&#8217;s latest insights comes just weeks after analysis from energy think tank Ember similarly found that renewables generated more of the EU&#8217;s electricity than fossil fuels over the past winter for the first time, while a further study from The University of Oxford found that the EU could fully replace Russian fossil gas with clean energy and heat pumps as soon as 2028.
