Pension scheme net zero transition plans are &#8220;dramatically underestimating&#8221; the risks and opportunities posed by climate change, a fresh study published today argues.<\/p>\n<p>A report from the Economics of Energy Innovation and System Transition (EEIST) project, led by the University of Exeter, concluded that the pensions industry has an &#8220;undeniably important role&#8221; to play in supporting the journey to net zero. The report calls on pension funds and other asset owners to &#8220;adopt decision-useful climate scenarios&#8221; to develop and implement bespoke transition plans. The EEIST also set out several transition planning principles for pension funds, providing a framework for net zero decision making and embedding the associated change in risk culture.<\/p>\n<p>The transition principles cover bespoke scenarios, non-linear approaches, shocks, adaptive processes, and opportunities, among other areas. Moreover, it argues adopting such scenarios would protect assets and support the transition to net zero. &#8220;Our paper sets out how pension funds can fundamentally reassess their strategic risk indicators,&#8221; said report co-author Jack Oliver, &#8220;Pension funds must rise to this challenge, even if it means changing the way investment decision-making is framed. &#8220;Using EEIST&#8217;s risks and opportunities approach, we recommend pension funds examine their plans to assess how far they reflect plausible future events, given the radical uncertainty financial markets face from climate change &#8211; much of which simply cannot be modelled.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research comes hot on the heels of a separate study last month by influential think tank Carbon Tracker, which warned that the retirement savings of millions of people could be at risk because pension funds continue to rely on &#8220;flawed&#8221; climate economics.
