New research published this month showed the annual cost to retailers of the deposit return scheme in Scotland would be \u00a3139.8 million. In 2019 the Scottish Government estimated the cost at \u00a350 million a year when it brought forward the deposit return regulations.<\/p>\n<p>After the collapse of the Scottish scheme earlier this year cost retailers tens of millions of pounds, the industry hopes Parliament will carefully scrutinise these new measures to ensure a similar scenario doesn\u2019t occur in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Ewan MacDonald-Russell, Deputy Head of the Scottish Retail Consortium, said: \u201cThe retail industry is committed to playing a leading role in moving Scotland to a more circular economy. It makes both environmental and economic sense to ensure the full value is taken out of used products and materials.
