Researchers stressed that large-scale hydrogen production will be essential in meeting the terms of the Paris Agreement’s climate targets and will enable the decarbonisation of a number of energy-intensive industries.

As such, HyPT is set to focus on three major net zero hydrogen production technologies: water electrolysis using clean power; methane pyrolysis, which heats natural gas to a high temperature and splits hydrogen into solid carbon; and photocatalytic solar water splitting, through which sunlight is used to help water break apart into oxygen and hydrogen. Researchers at Cranfield said they will also analyse the social and environmental system changes needed to build a global hydrogen economy, addressing issues such as affordability and examining the impact of production on local communities and ecosystems.

In addition, project partners will look to develop pathways within energy-intensive and hard-to-abate industries such as ammonia, steel, cement, aluminium, transportation, including routes to adopting hydrogen as a source of energy. Nazmine Ozkan, professor in sustainable energy transitions and head of the Centre for Energy Systems and Strategy at Cranfield University, and the UK lead for the project, described HyPT as a “transformative international collaboration” dedicated to driving the development of a sustainable hydrogen ecosystem. “Our mission is to unlock the potential of Net Zero hydrogen production making it an accessible and affordable energy source,” she said. “What’s crucial is that this initiative will not only advance cutting-edge hydrogen technologies, but also address the economic and policy dimensions that are essential to developing a global hydrogen economy.”

Other UK partners involved in the project include Imperial College London, Newcastle University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Birmingham. Dame Ottoline Leyser, CEO at the UKRI, said she was excited to be partnering with sister organisations in the US, Canada and Australia to accelerate the development of the hydrogen economy. “Our combined investment in Global Centers enables exciting researcher and innovation-led international and interdisciplinary collaboration to drive the energy transition,” she said. “I look forward to seeing the creative solutions developed through these global collaborations.” In related news, the University of Birmingham has announced that it is set to be a UK lead for a new £6.2m Global Centre in Clean Energy research.

The new centre, also funded by UKRI, will be called the Global Centre for Clean Energy and Equitable Transportation Solutions (CLEETS), and will focus on reducing emissions from road transport, using three regions as case studies: the West Midlands and South Wales in the UK, and the Great Lakes region of the US. The University of Birmingham said it has received £3.2m in funding for the Centre, and is set to be joined by Cardiff University as a UK project partner. The Discovery Partners Institute, which is part of the University of Illinois System, will also lead the project in the US following a $5m award from the National Science Foundation.

The Centre will be led in the UK by Dr Jonathan Radcliffe, reader in energy systems and policy at the University of Birmingham, with an interdisciplinary team of academics who have expertise in energy and transport demand, air quality and health, and local governance. Radcliffe said: “Designing a decarbonised transport system that meets the needs of the economy and communities, whilst being equitable and resilient, needs an approach that integrates research from across disciplines, with the private sector and policy making. “Decarbonising transport will be intricately coupled to the energy system, so we need a joined-up approach. This Global Centre gives us the opportunity to develop solutions in the UK and US at a scale that can transform our cities and regions.”

Source: Business Green

The post UK universities named global research centres for net zero innovation appeared first on Vastuullisuusuutiset.fi.

{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false

22
555,1013,579,3852
post-117093","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","tag-csr-news-en","tag-net-zero","tag-uk","tag-university
["GET
