Published today, the influential report confirmed the historic decline in EU power sector emissions was driven by coal and gas generation falling by 26 and 15 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Coal generation plummeted to an unprecedented 333TWH, accounting for just 12 per cent of the EU&#8217;s power mix, while the annual reduction in gas-powered electricity generation was the largest recorded since at least 1990 and the fourth consecutive year of decline. Ultimately, fossil generation accounted for less than a third of the EU&#8217;s power for the first time, Ember confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, wind and solar achieved record year-on-year increases in terms of both generation and installed capacity, together providing 27 per cent of EU electricity last year. Overall, renewable generation delivered a record 44 per cent share of EU power, as hydro generation also recovered from a 2022 slump. Wind alone generated 18 per cent of EU power, or 475 TWH &#8211; equivalent to France&#8217;s total generation demand &#8211; while solar contributed 246 TWH, accounting for nine per cent of the bloc&#8217;s electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Ember&#8217;s analysis provided further evidence of the EU&#8217;s continued shift towards a system powered predominantly by renewables, confirming that during 24 per cent of hours in 2023 less than a quarter of electricity came from fossil fuels &#8211; a major step up from just four per cent of hours in 2022. UK power sector emissions similarly fell by 16 per cent last year, driven by record wind generation of 82TWH and gas generation falling by a fifth. Demand also fell by two per cent to 317TWH in 2023, its lowest recorded level since 1989.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, wind and solar accounted for a third of UK electricity generation in 2023 &#8211; the highest combined levels to date and a sharp rise on the 29 per cent recorded in 2022.
