Residents in Tuscia, a large rural area north of Rome, say they have spent decades promoting organic farming and wildlife conservation and that the nuclear waste facility would threaten their livelihoods.<\/p>\n<p>Italian authorities have identified 51 potential sites across the country for the national dump, 22 of which are in Tuscia, meaning that there is a high probability it will be located there. One of the proposed dump sites is close to a World Wide Fund for Nature reserve called Pian Sant\u2019Angelo, which boasts centuries-old oaks and archaeological remains. It is a habitat for pine martens, wild cats and Hermann\u2019s tortoises.<\/p>\n<p>Italy closed down its nuclear power plants after a referendum in 1987, held in the wake of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The new deposit will store waste from those power plants as well as radioactive material that is still produced by industry, hospitals and research centres.
