The investment to create the Cranfield Hydrogen Integration Incubator (CH2i) at the University&#8217;s airport is the largest financial injection it has ever secured for a research programme and comprises \u00a323m from Research England&#8217;s Research Partnership Investment Fund and a further \u00a346m from industry partners and academic institutions.<\/p>\n<p>CH2i will include a Hydrogen Integration Research Centre, two separate test beds to support hydrogen and liquid hydrogen activity, and new fuel systems, storage, and propulsion infrastructure. The project will substantially increase Cranfield Airport&#8217;s capacity to test hydrogen-powered aviation technologies. The funding will also provide new equipment, project management, and staffing to support the project.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This game-changing investment builds on Cranfield&#8217;s expertise in hydrogen research and will help the aviation industry to make the leap to using hydrogen,&#8221; said Professor Karen Holford, chief executive and vice-chancellor of Cranfield University. &#8220;CH2i will integrate with other large industry research areas at Cranfield including our novel hydrogen production programmes and our Aerospace Integration Research Centre and the Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Working with research and industry partners nationally and internationally, we will unlock some of the most significant technical challenges around the future development and deployment of hydrogen in aviation. It&#8217;s a very exciting prospect for our researchers, partners and for the aviation industry. It will help to build the pathway to net zero emissions aviation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The development of CH2i should support the government&#8217;s Jet Zero strategy, whch includes targets to deliver net zero emission domestic aviation by 2040. The announcement follows the recent publication of the government&#8217;s Future of Flight action plan, which targets first piloted flying taxi flight by 2026, regular drone deliveries by 2027, and autonomous flying taxis demos by 2030. It also comes after Skyports recently inked an agreement to open the UK&#8217;s first flying taxi testbed in Oxfordshire by the end of 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In related hydrogen investment news, Europe&#8217;s largest climate tech hub Sustainable Ventures has this week been chosen to help a raft of government-backed hydrogen start-ups expand over the next 12 to 18 months through its recently opened Manchester hub. Delivered in tandem with technology innovation centre and founding member of the UK government&#8217;s High Value Manufacturing Catapult, CPI, thenew venture has been backed by \u00a31.5m of private investment and is aiming to generate \u00a35m in commercial contracts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We share the consortium&#8217;s belief that hydrogen is critical to decarbonising the most challenging areas of the economy and that it presents a huge opportunity for the UK, so we&#8217;re pleased to have been chosen to lead the delivery of this vitally important programme,&#8221; said Andrew Ruffler, Sustainable Ventures&#8217; northern director. &#8220;We&#8217;ve been a trusted partner of government-backed bodies and local authorities for some time, and are really excited to expand this work into the North-West.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Climate tech innovation is happening all over the UK, not just in London.
