According to the Swiss NGO&#8217;s latest Plastic Overshoot Day report levels of plastic waste have now risen seven per cent since 2021 and will exceed the world&#8217;s capacity to manage it on 5 September, resulting in 117 days of &#8220;overshoot&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Global average plastic waste per person is also set to rise to 28kg this year. The study found just 12 countries are responsible for 60 per cent of the world&#8217;s mismanaged plastic waste, with China, USA, India, Brazil, and Mexico making up the top five. Figures released ahead of the fourth round of negotiations for a UN Global Plastics Treaty in Ottawa, Canada, also forecast more than a third of this waste will be mismanaged at end of life resulting in 68.6 million tonnes of plastic ending up in nature.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, EA Earth Action claims any improvements in waste management capacity are being outpaced by rising plastic production, warning that the assumption recycling alone can solve the plastic pollution crisis is &#8216;flawed&#8217;. &#8220;The findings are unequivocal; improvements in waste management capacity are outpaced by rising plastic production, making progress almost invisible,&#8221; said Sarah Perreard, co-CEO, at EA Earth Action and Plastic Footprint Network.<\/p>\n<p>Perreard urged delegates attending UN Plastic Treaty negotiations in Ottawa, to pursue &#8220;science-driven, robust global policy&#8221; that matches the scale of the plastic pollution problem. &#8220;Let 2024 be the year we pivot to a trajectory that embraces reduction, ensuring the legacy we leave is not one buried in plastic,&#8221; she added. The report also revealed that from this month almost half of the world&#8217;s population will be living in areas where plastic waste generated has already exceeded the capacity to manage. This figure is predicted to rise to two thirds of the global population by the global overshoot day of September 5th.<\/p>\n<p>Sian Sutherland, co-founder of A Plastic Planet and the Plastic Health Council &#8211; which hosted the Plastic Solutions &amp; Health Summit in Washington D.C yesterday &#8211; said plastic pollution was having grave environmental impacts. &#8220;We have a narrow window of opportunity this year to create a global Plastics Treaty that will protect not only our ocean, our air, our soil but our own children,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The question for every government now is this &#8211; will you negotiate a Treaty to protect the health of your people; or will you negotiate a Treaty to protect the profits of the fossil fuel industry? &#8220;Viable solutions are already available at scale, giving us materials and systems that work in harmony with nature, not against it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>EA Earth Action&#8217;s forecast comes just days after almost 3,000 companies with a combined $25tr in market value were found to have provided data on their plastic use through CDP&#8217;s disclosure platform for first time.
