Housed within the University of Sheffield&#8217;s advanced manufacturing research centre, the plant will produce working prototypes of the individual modules that could eventually be assembled to become small modular nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the plans yesterday, Rolls-Royce SMR said the announcement marked a &#8220;vital first step&#8221; towards deploying a fleet of nuclear power plants in the UK and abroad. &#8220;Our investment in setting up this facility and building prototype modules is another significant milestone for our business,&#8221; said Victoria Scott, chief manufacturing engineer at Rolls-Royce SMR. &#8220;Our factories will produce hundreds of prefabricated and pre-tested modules ready for assembly on site. This facility will allow us to refine our production, testing and digital approach to manufacturing &#8211; helping de-risk our programme and ensure we increase our delivery certainty.&#8221; The \u00a32.7m module manufacturing and testing facility represents the first phase of a \u00a315m deal Rolls-Royce has signed with Sheffield University to trial manufacturing techniques for its proposed SMRs.<\/p>\n<p>Koen Lamberts, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Sheffield, welcomed the news of the latest phase of the partnership with the engineering giant. &#8220;We are very proud that Rolls-Royce SMR has chosen to base its Module Development Facility at our Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre&#8217;s Factory 2050,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Today&#8217;s announcement is a testament to the University&#8217;s strengths in clean energy research and innovation, and our unrivalled expertise in developing leading-edge manufacturing techniques. We welcome this significant commitment from Rolls-Royce SMR to our ongoing partnership and the South Yorkshire region.&#8221; Advocates of SMRs maintain they could slash nuclear power costs compared to large scale reactors, could be delivered on considerably faster timetables, and as such could play a major role in the decarbonisation of grids around the world.<\/p>\n<p>However, critics have warned no commercial SMRs have been delivered anywhere in the world and have argued the nuclear industry has a long history of projects that miss deadlines and result in huge additional costs. They have argued that the government should not rely on the technology to meet its emissions targets and should instead redouble efforts to deliver more renewables capacity backed up by energy storage, while also prioritising energy efficiency improvements.<\/p>\n<p>But today, Claire Coutinho, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, said small nuclear reactors were &#8220;the future of nuclear technology&#8221;, as she celebrated Rolls-Royce&#8217;s SMR&#8217;s decision to develop a prototype manufacturing factory in Sheffield. &#8220;Small modular reactors are the future of nuclear technology, and key to quadrupling the UK&#8217;s nuclear capacity by 2050 as part of the biggest expansion in 70 years,&#8221; she said. &#8220;This multi-million-pound SMR manufacturing facility will be fantastic for Sheffield &#8211; making the Steel City once again the home to world-leading industry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the government committed \u00a3210m in grant funding to Rolls-Royce SMR to launch a fleet of small nuclear reactors in the UK.
