Green energy is dependent on the sustainable recovery of rare earth elements (REEs), which are in increasing demand for use in technologies such as electric cars and wind turbines. According to the research, eggshell waste could help absorb and separate REEs from water due to the calcium carbonate in the shell, offering a new extraction method.<\/p>\n<p>REEs are in increasing demand and decreasing in supply, explained the research team, making the search for environmentally friendly extraction methods important. The work suggests that wasted eggshells could be repurposed as a low-cost, eco-friendly material to help meet the growing demand for REES. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, REEs comprise 17 of the metallic elements from the periodic table and play a critical role in the country\u2019s national security, energy independence, environmental future and economic growth. These elements are used in multiple industries including health care, transportation, power generation, petroleum refining and consumer electronics.<\/p>\n<p>In the paper, the research team explains that few countries have historically been willing to operate REE mines due to their high environmental and health risk, as they can cause the release of toxic or radioactive sludges.
