The study, \u2018The plastic recycling deception\u2019, said that the focus on recycling has allowed the industry to \u201cprotect its profit margins\u201d. According to Planet Tracker, the plastic industry\u2019s use of resin identification codes (RIC), often mistaken for recycling symbols, has also further misled policymakers, regulators and consumers into \u201cbelieving in the circularity of plastic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>With plastic production reportedly set to triple by 2060 and lifecycle emissions from plastics estimated to more than double, accounting for 4.5% of global emissions, the report has called on \u201cupstream corporates to take responsibility for their role\u201d in plastic pollution by adopting a \u201cclear plan\u201d to transition production towards \u201csafe, environmentally sound and sustainable\u201d materials.
