Gaussion, a spin-off from University College London (UCL), said the capital injection would allow it to start producing and selling its solution, and potentially license its technology for other applications.<\/p>\n<p>The company has developed a technology which promises to significantly reduce the charging time of lithium-ion batteries by exposing them to a specially designed magnetic field during charging. It claims its &#8220;magnetic enhancement&#8221; solution can &#8220;radically&#8221; enhance the battery performance of commercially available battery cells, while also lowering levels of cell degradation so as to extend battery life.<\/p>\n<p>Improving the performance of batteries is seen as critical to boosting adoption of a range of technologies critical to decarbonisation, including electric vehicles, residential energy storage units, and utility-scale energy storage systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Series A round was led by transportation-focused venture capital firm Autotech Ventures and supported by existing investors BGF and the UCL Technology Fund. Gaussion CEO and co-founder, Tom Heenan, said efforts to rapidly electrify a range of technologies were currently being &#8220;delayed or blocked&#8221; by the cost of raising the ceiling of battery performance. &#8220;Magnetic enhancement could provide step-change improvements across all chemistries, formats and applications, affordably unlocking electrification without compromising on cost or performance,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Alexei Andreev, co-founder and managing director of Autotech Ventures, said he saw &#8220;tremendous opportunities&#8221; for Gaussion&#8217;s solution in a variety of markets. &#8220;Gaussion&#8217;s approach aims to expand the solution space by introducing a new variable, rather than displacing or replacing existing technologies,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They leverage the advancements of current battery cell giants and apply an external magnetic field to enhance the performance of established battery technologies without changing their core components.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Series A funding comes more than a year after Gaussion snapped up a \u00a32.85m equity deal from BGF and UCL Technology Fund.
