Until recently, the US position was similar to that of China and Saudi Arabia in seeking more emphasis on packaging design and recycling.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, EU member states are among those with more ambitious goals to limit production. This group has also targeted a list of chemicals of environmental concern used in plastic production that should be eliminated. The change in the American position is reported by Reuters, quoting a source close the US negotiators involved in the United Nations treaty which is due to be concluded in Busan, South Korea in November.<\/p>\n<p>The Reuters source says the US supports a possible list of chemicals on which to develop obligations to avoid different national requirements, as well as setting global criteria to identify what \u2018avoidable plastic products\u2019 could be phased out. The source says US stakeholders have been briefed, with environmental groups praising the shift in approach while industry groups were critical. The American Chemistry Council, for example, is quoted as accusing the Biden administration of \u2018caving in\u2019 to the wishes of environmental groups.
