Carbon insetting funds and free public transport: How sustainable were the Euros 2024? ll ten Euro 2024 stadiums were operated entirely on green energy.<\/p>\n<p>Football has been the highlight of the summer for many, with Euro 2024 in Germany followed in quick succession by the Paris Olympics and then the start of the new Premier League Season. This has prompted lively debate about the sustainability of the beautiful game.<\/p>\n<p>For the Euro 2024 tournament, UEFA invested \u20ac32m in an environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, covering 11 areas of action, 28 topics, 48 targets, 100 activities and 83 key performance indicators. These included using renewable energy, implementing circular waste management and enhancing transparency and accountability.<\/p>\n<p>An emissions reduction plan was introduced to limit the tournament\u2019s carbon footprint, which has been projected to be around 490,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. The tournament report, out this week, highlights that sustainability managers were appointed at each of the ten host venues, supported by 500 volunteers, to address accessibility, human rights and environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we summarise the key takeaways from the strategy. Each match ticket for the Euros included a 36-hour UEFA fan pass for local public transport. Deutsche Bahn offered discounted fares for travel between match venues and across Europe. The tournament schedule was designed to minimise air travel for teams, and UEFA staff were required to use trains when possible. Discounted and free public transport schemes led to 81% of spectators using eco-friendly transport to reach the stadiums.<\/p>\n<p>All ten Euro 2024 stadiums were already existing venues and were operated entirely on green energy, with renewable sources powering both the grounds and headquarters. UEFA has not yet disclosed the proportion of energy self-generated, versus procured via tariffs and power purchase agreements (PPAs).<\/p>\n<p>Each venue was tasked with implementing circular economy principles focused on reuse, reduction, recycling and recovery of waste. Initiatives included a reusable cup system and the donation of leftover food. Exact waste generation figures and recycling rates are yet to be published. A full report is due out this October.<\/p>\n<p>UEFA invested approximately \u20ac7m in environmental projects led by nearly 190 amateur football clubs and 21 regional associations across Germany to offset the carbon footprint of Euro 2024. This funding was allocated through a new \u2018climate fund\u2019 launched earlier this year. For every tonne of unavoidable CO2e emissions projected for the tournament, UEFA contributed \u20ac25 to the fund, resulting in a total of around \u20ac7m. German amateur clubs applied for financial support for projects focused on energy transition, water stewardship, waste management or smart mobility.<\/p>\n<p>This is a novel approach to carbon offsetting as concerns about the credibility of large, international projects continue to loom over corporate sustainability professionals. On the transparency and accountability front, UEFA aligned its sustainability strategy with the German supply chain act and provided basic sustainability education for all tournament personnel. Additionally, UEFA adopted a policy of more environmentally responsible sponsorship by excluding gas, oil and utilities companies from commercial partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>An external audit will assess the tournament\u2019s sustainability performance, and a comprehensive ESG report is scheduled for release in October 2024.
