This is according to recent findings derived from BloombergNEF\u2019s reports \u2018Power Transition Trends 2024\u2019 and the \u20182H 2024 Renewable Energy Investment Tracker, analysing the power capacity and generation data from 140 markets across the world. According to the research findings, zero-carbon sources made up more than 40% of the global electricity generated for the first time ever in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Hydropower accounted for 14.7%, while wind and solar contributed around 13.9% \u2013 a new record high. The electricity generated from nuclear accounted for 9.4%.Moreover, almost 91% of the global net power capacity additions came from solar and wind in 2023, up from 83% in 2022. In comparison, the net new power capacity additions from fossil fuels accounted for just 6%, the sector\u2019s lowest level ever.<\/p>\n<p>Wind power now alone accounts for 1 terawatt (TW) of installed power-generating capacity, while the global installed solar fleet stands at 1.6TW, witnessing a 76% year-on-year growth, with a net 428 gigawatts (GW) of solar deployed last year. Report author Sofia Maia said: \u201cWe have seen a step-change in renewable energy compared to a few years before. There\u2019s now no question this is the largest source of new power generation, wherever you go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the findings, only ten economies accounted for nearly three-quarters of total renewable energy generation in 2023, with mainland China producing nearly one-third of all global renewable energy output last year. In addition to China, the US, Brazil, Canada and India made it to the top five, accounting for 60% of the world\u2019s renewable generation last year. China continues to dominate the clean energy investment market, with the US trailing behind with a 63% rise in its half-annual investment levels since the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) passed in August 2022.<\/p>\n<p>As part of President Joe Biden\u2019s plans to grow the US economy post-pandemic, the IRA set aside $64bn of loans, grants and tax breaks for renewable energy sectors, almost half of which is aimed at next-generation technologies like floating wind and electrolytic hydrogen.
