This change is part of a broader effort that has seen the retailer eliminate more than 80 million plastic units across various produce lines, with a total of 400 million units removed from its food hall so far. The retailer has switched to paperboard punnets for organic blueberries, eliminating around one million plastic trays, to give an example.<\/p>\n<p>M&amp;S is also testing new packaging for chestnut mushrooms, using top-seal board punnets instead of flexible plastic. If the trial is successful, the packaging will be used for all mushroom varieties. The company recently surpassed its goal of removing 75 million plastic units for the 2023\/24 period, four months ahead of schedule.<\/p>\n<p>M&amp;S has committed to reaching net-zero emissions by 2040. It is also aiming for all its packaging to be recyclable by 2025.
