Since taking power in July, the new UK Labour government has clarified that it wants closer cooperation with Europe on energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe transition to clean energy is critical and that means working with partners in Europe\u201d UK Climate Secretary Kerry McCarthy told an offshore energy conference in Norway on 28 August.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen\u2019s political guidelines, released just before her successful 18 July bid to be reappointed European Commission resident, committed to strengthening relations with the UK \u201con issues of shared interest,\u201d with energy at the top of her list. While the mood is positive, \u201cthere\u2019s no definitive next steps\u201d according to Jo\u00ebl Reland, research fellow at think tank \u2018UK in a Changing Europe\u2019. \u201cIt all depends on political priorities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>UK-EU relations are now managed via the 2021 EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), which contains a large chapter on energy and is up for review in 2026.
