UK financiers were ranked as the 10th largest creditors of the forest-risk companies.<\/p>\n<p>This is according to a report published today (16 October) by Global Witness in collaboration with the Forests &amp; Finance coalition. The report, based on data from independent research organisation Profundo, highlights the gap between pledges and action in the UK\u2019s financial sector;.<\/p>\n<p>The study identifies UK financial institutions as the third-largest investors globally in shares and bonds issued by \u201cforest-risk\u201d companies, behind the US and Japan, when excluding banks based in tropical forest countries.<\/p>\n<p>Forest-risk companies operate in regions such as Southeast Asia, Central and West Africa, and South America and are involved in industries like beef, palm oil and soy, which are significant drivers of tropical deforestation. UK financiers were also ranked as the 10th largest creditors of these forest-risk companies. This ranking rises to 7th when excluding banks based in countries where tropical forests are located.<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights that this puts the UK\u2019s commitments under the Glasgow Leaders\u2019 Declaration to halt and reverse global deforestation by 2030 at risk. This Declaration was made during COP26 in winter 2021.Global Witness\u2019 forests campaign lead Alexandria Reid said: \u201cIt\u2019s time to put an end to this hypocrisy \u2013 the UK cannot claim to be leaders in the fight against nature loss while bankrolling its destruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reckless financing is helping fuel deforestation and tearing apart our planet\u2019s vital ecosystems \u2013 all while undermining the UK\u2019s promises to tackle the climate crisis. Labour fought for and won a new Treasury review of deforestation finance under the last government and now they must seize this opportunity to deliver it and stop deforestation before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>COP16 stands for the 16th meeting of the UN Conference of the Parties for biodiversity.
