This is according to the latest EY Institutional Investor Survey, which collected responses from 350 decision-makers at investment firms worldwide. According to the survey, nearly two-thirds (64%) of investors say sustainability reports need independent audits, while 80% believe companies should better highlight material information and make reports easier to compare.<\/p>\n<p>Despite growing corporate focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, the survey found a sharp disconnect between investor statements and actions. While 88% of respondents said their firms had increased their use of ESG data in the past year, 92% remain unwilling to sacrifice short-term financial performance for the potential long-term rewards of ESG investments.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, two-thirds (66%) say ESG factors are likely to play a smaller role in their future investment decisions, signalling a shift away from prioritising sustainability in the long term. This may be partly due to the pushing of anti-ESG legislation in parts of the USA. EY\u2019s global climate change and sustainability services leader Dr Matthew Bell said: \u201cThe global investor community should be front and centre of the drive for sustainability, but instead what we\u2019re witnessing is worrying levels of apathy. \u201cMany investors do make the right noises on climate change but there\u2019s a real failure to walk the talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Investors favour short-term gains<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The survey finds that most investors are more comfortable assessing short-term ESG impacts than long-term outcomes. Only 25% feel equipped to evaluate the long-term effects of ESG policies, while 57% say they can assess short-term impacts. This focus on immediate returns over sustainability reflects a broader trend in investment strategies. The survey also shows limited concern about climate change within investment strategies. While 93% of respondents believe companies will meet their decarbonisation and sustainability targets, only 17% actively monitor changes in corporate climate policies. Additionally, just 55% believe climate change will influence their strategies at all.<\/p>\n<p>The survey findings also highlight that investor scepticism about corporate sustainability claims is widespread, with 85% of respondents identifying greenwashing as a more significant problem now than it was five years ago.
