The findings follow an investigation by the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) into the management of combined sewer overflows (CSOs), in which untreated sewage is released into waterways. The OEP launched its investigation after receiving a complaint from the environmental group WildFish, formerly Salmon &amp; Trout Conservation UK. It found that the regulatory system has allowed untreated sewage discharges to occur beyond the exceptional circumstances permitted by law, such as unusually heavy rainfall.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation places responsibility on Defra, the EA and Ofwat to strengthen their roles in managing CSOs and preventing environmental harm from sewage discharges. Consultations on updated frameworks and guidance are ongoing, but the OEP stresses the importance of further action. Each authority has been issued a decision notice outlining the findings and steps they must take to address the issues. The authorities have two months to respond, with court action possible if they fail to act.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the OEP\u2019s decision, Ofwat stated: \u201cWe are actively taking steps to remedy the issues the OEP has identified. We will continue to prioritise our enforcement investigation into all wastewater companies which started in 2021 to ensure that companies are meeting their environmental obligations. We have proposed penalties of over \u00a3168m on Thames, Yorkshire and Northumbria Water.
