Writing on the Telegram messaging app, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the end of gas transit through his country to Europe was &#8221;one of Moscow&#8217;s biggest defeats&#8221; and urged the United States to supply more gas to Europe. &#8221;The more there is on the market from Europe&#8217;s real partners, the faster we will overcome the last negative consequences of European energy dependence on Russia,&#8221; he wrote, adding that Europe&#8217;s &#8221;joint task&#8221; now was to support ex-Soviet Moldova &#8221;in this period of energy transformation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Russia and the former Soviet Union spent half a century building up a major share of the European gas market, which at its peak stood at around 35%. In 2020, when the last five-year transit agreement started, Russia shipped about 65 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas via Ukraine. Supplies have since fallen to 15 bcm, accounting for less than 10% of the EU&#8217;s pipeline gas imports in 2023 Following the cancallation of the contract, Russian energy giant Gazprom will lose an estimated $5 billion (\u20ac4.84 billion) in gas sales, while Ukraine will lose up to $1 billion a year in transit fees from Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The end of the agreement, however, raises questions about gas supply in landlocked eastern EU countries, which cannot import LNG by sea. Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia still rely on Russian gas which is why the governments there are eager to continue purchasing Russian gas. Before the Ukraine war, Russia was the world&#8217;s largest exporter of natural and Europe was Moscow&#8217;s most important market. European governments prioritized access to cheap energy over concerns about doing business with Putin.<\/p>\n<p>The mutually beneficial relationship began more than 50 years ago, when the former Soviet Union needed funds and equipment to develop its Siberian gas fields.
