This article lists six hot topics to watch in cleantech for 2025. Carbon reduction and Scope 3 Circular economy Climate &amp; nature Energy Energy efficiency Onsite technologies Renewables Tech &amp; innovation<\/p>\n<p>It would be fair to say that 2024 was a mixed bag for climate and environmental action, tending towards disappointment. COP29 finished with an important carbon markets agreement, but \u2018abysmally poor\u2019 climate finance texts. In politics, the UK\u2019s Labour Party was elected with a manifesto containing significant commitments to renewable energy, yet Donald Trump\u2019s triumph has thrown the longevity of clean tech measures in the Inflation Reduction Act into question. And, in the corporate world, there has been some backsliding on net-zero targets due, in part, to difficulties surrounding scope 3 emissions.<\/p>\n<p>But investments and innovations are taking shape \u2013 often behind the scenes \u2013 that could speed up the achievement of positive milestones in the near future. The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently reported that global renewable capacity is currently expected to grow 2.7 times by 2030. This is 25% higher than countries\u2019 current ambitions, and only just shy of the goal of tripling renewable capacity by the end of the decade, which was agreed at COP28. The IEA states that the tripling goal is \u201cwithin reach, but policy improvements are needed.\u201d What is more, spending on clean energy technology and infrastructure during 2024 is expected to be twice the amount going into fossil fuels \u2013 a symbolic milestone.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the established renewable energy technologies, analysis of the fortunes of cleantech startups uncovers some other pockets of momentum. Enhanced geothermal energy, thermal energy storage, and seaweed packaging are all showing promising signs of progress. And technologies that have long proved to be a tough nut to crack, such as textile-to-textile recycling, are also edging towards wider commercialisation. As we head into 2025, we\u2019ve selected six promising innovation areas to look out for in the year ahead.
