The facility will safely store highly radioactive waste for an extended period, specifically 100,000 years. The construction work of the Spent Fuel Repository is taking place in S\u00f6derviken, adjacent to the Forsmark nuclear power plant. This repository \u2014 located 500 meters below ground in solid bedrock \u2014 will be the second of its kind in the world.<\/p>\n<p>This deep burial in stable rock would ensure the long-term isolation and safety of the highly radioactive waste. The repository will be situated in 1.9-billion-year-old bedrock. The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) website states that roughly 12,000 tonnes of spent nuclear fuel will be stored within this repository. The nuclear industry has long grappled with the challenge of safely disposing of its waste. Nuclear waste is infamous for its long-lasting radioactivity, often persisting for millennia.<\/p>\n<p>The World Nuclear Association estimates that roughly 300,000 tons of spent nuclear fuel worldwide require proper disposal. However, most spent fuel currently resides in temporary storage pools near reactors, posing potential long-term risks. The problem of nuclear waste disposal is projected to worsen as the expansion of nuclear power for energy transition gains momentum. In fact, many countries \u2014 particularly in Europe \u2014 are already planning to construct new nuclear reactors. At the moment, Finland is the leading nation in developing a permanent, deep geological repository for high-level nuclear waste. The operations are expected to start by 2026.
