Regulators approved more than 2,400 new onshore wind turbines with a total output of around 14 gigawatts, a record high, said a new report from the German Wind Energy Association and VDMA Power Systems, the association for power plant engineering.<\/p>\n<p>Wind has also come under fire from Friedrich Merz, chairman of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU). At the end of last year, Merz publicly described wind power as an &#8221;ugly&#8221; &#8221;transition energy&#8221; that might someday be dismantled. But the party&#8217;s election manifesto \u2014 compiled together with its Bavarian sister party the CSU \u2014 talks about making use of all renewable energy sources, including both on and offshore wind.<\/p>\n<p>Actually doing away with all of Germany&#8217;s wind turbines, which today number more than 30,000, would, according to experts, cost the country dearly in decommissioning fees, expropriation and compensation payments.
