In Scotland, more than 388 million disposable cups are used every year.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the initiative, consumers will be able to buy drinks in a \u2018Borrow Cup\u2019 for a \u00a31 deposit. Consumers can get their money back in person or as an e-voucher if they return their \u2018Borrow Cup\u2019 to the participating shops or at a return point, respectively. The used cups are then collected, washed and sent back to stores by Reposit. The trial will take place for an initial three-month period at more than 40 different locations including branches of Costa Coffee, Caff\u00e8 Nero and Burger King. Other participating organisations include Tinberbox, Sprigg, Kelvingrove Gallery, Glasgow City Chambers and Plant Blonde.<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, more than 388 million disposable cups are used every year, according to a 2022 research from Zero Waste Scotland. Hubbub\u2019s own research finds that while three in four people own a personal reusable cup, only a third use one at least once a month. A key barrier is remembering to take the cup when leaving the house. Hubbub said in a statement: \u201cProducing and throwing away disposable cups can use more resources and create more carbon emissions than using a reusable cup over and over. \u201cThe more we reuse, the more resources and emissions we save, reducing our environmental impact even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, major event venues in Belfast announced commitments to eliminate single-use plastic cups in a city-wide effort to reduce waste, mirroring similar schemes across Ireland. The initiative, launching as a 12-month pilot, will introduce reusable cups at iconic venues such as the Waterfront Hall, Ulster Hall, SSE Arena, Oh Yeah Centre, Black Box, Voodoo and The MAC, with more venues expected to join the initiative in the next phase.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme involves North Down Marquees supplying reusable cups to participating venues and collecting them after use. The cups will be washed at a central facility in Carryduff before being redistributed, creating a sustainable loop. Single-use cups have been phased out at Irish events in recent years, often through deposit return schemes where attendees pay a small fee, refundable upon cup return.<\/p>\n<p>Ireland launched its own Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in February last year for single-use drinks packaging like plastic bottles and aluminium cans. The UK Government has also recently reaffirmed its plans to launch a DRS scheme in October 2027, enabling consumers to return and recycle plastic and metal packaging containers.
