The SMMT has today (17 February) released registration numbers concerning new heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in 2024. Its data confirms that almost 45,000 HGVs were registered in 2024, making this the industry\u2019s second-best annual performance in a five-year period. But just 0.5% of these HGVs were zero-emission, with the total number of units registered falling by 7.3% and the market share remaining stagnant.<\/p>\n<p>While the UK Government signalled, under Boris Johnson, that the sale of all new, non-zero emission HGVs weighing up to 26 tonnes would be banned from 2035, the SMMT is concerned that there are not sufficient interventions in place to ease the transition for fleet managers.<\/p>\n<p>New, larger HGVs should be zero-emission only by 2040. \u201cManufacturers have invested significantly to deliver a wide choice of ZEV models but the higher cost of production means higher acquisition costs for operators \u2013 in addition to expensive depot infrastructure upgrades \u2013 posing significant barriers to uptake,\u201d the SMMT stated.<\/p>\n<p>The Society is asking Ministers for clarity on the way forward once the part of the Plug-In Van and Truck Grant covering HGVs closes at the end of March. It also wants policymakers to intervene to ease the rollout of dedicated charging and refuelling points for low and zero-emission HGVs.<\/p>\n<p>SMMT CEO Mike Hawes said: \u201cWith most of the market nearly one full investment cycle away from the 2035 end of sale, urgent action is needed to address stagnant zero-emission HGV uptake. Manufacturers are delivering the products \u2013 now operators must be convinced to invest. Meaningful fiscal support and infrastructure rollout is essential, therefore, so that fleet transition is a compelling commercial proposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UK Government has been compelled by the High Court to update its Net-Zero Strategy by the end of May 2025. To ensure that the updated strategy is lawful, Ministers have been asked to add more specific details on decarbonisation pathways for each key sector, including transport.<\/p>\n<p>Better news for zero-emission buses<br \/>\nThe SMMT has, however, posted better news about the decarbonisation of the UK\u2019s bus stock, confirming that deliveries increased by one than one-third year-on-year in 2024. Total bus, coach and minibus registrations surged by 70.1% year-on-year to reach almost 8,400 vehicles in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Of these units, 1,570 were electric or hydrogen. Registration figures for zero-emission options were up by more than one-third year-on-year, partly due to the increased availability of electric and hydrogen models in the single-decker and double-decker bus markets and partly due to to continued funding under the Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme.
