From Second Harvest in Tennessee to FoodCycle Indonesia and ABACO in Colombia, these organizations are implementing innovative waste management solutions like traditional composting and black soldier fly composting to reduce landfill waste, enrich soil, and support small-scale farmers.<\/p>\n<p>The nonprofit is one of a few North American Food Banks leveraging would-be-garbage to indirectly quell hunger while curbing greenhouse gas emissions. There are some interesting projects going on overseas too. FoodCycle Indonesia takes wasted food off of hotels\u2019, restaurants\u2019, and food manufacturers\u2019 hands and feeds it to black soldier flies that break it down. Unlike aerobic composting, which can take months, the larvae break down waste within days. Additionally, this method, called black soldier fly composting, can provide revenue streams, says Astrid Paramita, CEO of FoodCycle Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Colombia\u2019s ABACO is a national network of 25 food banks benefiting 1.2 million people. Some of the members do composting. More traditional composting is working well for them.
