It has been estimated that the average Brit gets rid of 3.1kg of textiles each year, with more than half ending up in landfill.<\/p>\n<p>Called Automated Sorting for Cirularity in Textiles \u2013 or ACT UK for short \u2013 the project was overseen by textiles take-back platform Reskinned and supported by organisations including retailers Tesco and Marks &amp; Spencer (M&amp;S). A key focus was providing systems for the collection of items which people do not think are fit for resale or donation to charity shops.<\/p>\n<p>Tesco worked with Salvation Army Trading Company to add an extra collection bank to car parks at 18 stores across the East of England. They also added extra clothes banks at two local authority recycling centres in the trial. A regional communications campaign was delivered to make people aware of their options.<\/p>\n<p>Salvation Army Trading Company recorded an increase in the total amount of clothing donations at the sites, exceeding 25%. The trial has therefore been extended. The Company\u2019s circular economy and sustainability manager Bernie Thomas said: \u201cOverall, the trial indicates the public want to separate damaged and worn-out clothing for recycling and make them back into new textile products, rather than discard it in the bin.\u201cTo enable this, new and engaging collection services are required. These must be coupled with clear and prolonged communications and education around the types of worn-out textiles that can be donated for recycling and their condition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Textile Recycling International added ten pairs of clothes collection banks across the borough of Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Each location had one bank for clothes that could be worn again, and those which are worn out.<\/p>\n<p><em>Going postal<\/em><br \/>\nM&amp;S, meanwhile, provided a way for customers to return used and worn-out clothes to Oxfam for free via post. Almost 10,000 bags were requested and more than one-third were returned. Of the returned bags, 44% included a dedicated bag of worn-out clothing. Oxfam recorded a 46% increase in the volume of clothes collected compared to normal Oxfam postal donations.M&amp;S had already been working with Oxfam on in-store collection points for clothing recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Homeware retailer Dunelm also offered a postal take-back service through ACT UK. It enabled customers to send worn-out items to Salvation Army Trading Company. There was strong demand, and more than half (56%) of those who requested a postal bag returned it.<\/p>\n<p>Reskinned was the final participant to offer a postal takeback service. Customers selected whether an item was being sent in for \u2018rewear\u2019 or \u2018recycling\u2019. In either case, they were rewarded with a \u00a310 voucher to be spent on the Reskinned website. Two-thirds of people who started the takeback process followed through, resulting in almost 1,000 items being collected within three months. Nine in ten people chose the correct option out of \u2018rewear\u2019 or \u2018recycling\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Reskinned co-founder Ross Barry said: \u201cThe opportunity to launch a trial through the ACT UK project enabled us to test whether our customers were looking for a place to send their worn-out clothing.
