The new annual Global Water Monitor report confirms that the economic costs of precipitation-related extreme weather events in 2024 topped $550bn.<\/p>\n<p>The costliest spate of events were the severe hurricanes that hit southeastern parts of the USA during September and October, racking up $500bn in costs. The costs associated with Typhoon Yagi, which hit southeast Asia as summer drew to a close, are estimated at $17bn.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, water-related disasters killed more than 8,700 people and displaced a further 40 million during 2024 .\u201cHavoc\u201d is being wrought on the planet\u2019s water cycle by climate change, the researchers behind the Global Water Monitor concluded. Warmer air can hold more water vapour, leading to more intense periods of rain. Warmer seas provide more energy to hurricanes and typhoons. And a warming world, in general, shifts rainfall patterns.<\/p>\n<p>It notes that precipitation over land was close to the average seen between 1995 and 2005, certain regions received an excess while others languished in drought. Severe drought gripped the Amazon river basin and Southern Africa during the summer while, at the same time, monsoons in Bangladesh displaced half a million people. Record highs for monthly rainfall were set 27% more often in 2024 than in 2000, and daily rainfall records were set 52% more frequently. The report calls this increase \u201csignificant\u201d. Daily records were broken across South Asia but also in pockets of Europe including France and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Across monthly and daily data, record lows for rainfall were set 38% more frequently in 2024 than 2020. And lake and reservoir storage worldwide declined for a fifth consecutive year, with South America the worst affected. \u201cThis report reinforces a clear message: as the planet warms, water challenges are escalating, year after year,\u201d the report states. As such, it cautions that the situation globally is unlikely to materially improve in 2025 and is, in fact, likely to worsen.<\/p>\n<p>The conclusion is that, because global temperatures are likely to increase further in 2025, more intense storms and extreme rainfall events are likely. Regions already at risk may well see \u2018flash floods\u2019 and\/or \u2018flash droughts\u2019, including Europe.
