As these discarded cigarette butts sit in lakes, rivers, and oceans, resistant bacteria multiply rapidly on them. This could result in infections that are more difficult to treat, which poses an additional public health concern that had previously gone largely unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the ecological consequences, the research discovered similarly worrying effects for consumers of tobacco. Smokers inadvertently speed up the transmission of antibiotic-resistant germs in their lungs, diminishing the efficacy of antibiotic therapy at times of infection.
