It aims to help corporates set goals that tackle habit loss, overfishing and marine biodiversity decline through value chain action. The ocean is the planet\u2019s largest carbon sink but is degrading due to overfishing and pollution. The new standard is aimed at helping businesses tackle this challenge and build resilient supply chains. \u201cWith the first ocean science-based targets for seafood, companies now have a globally recognized framework to scale action across land, freshwater, and ocean,\u201d the SBTN\u2019s executive director Erin Billman said. \u201cThese targets help companies move beyond incremental change, strengthening marine ecosystems, supply chain resilience, and long-term viability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The standard has been developed with guidance from WWF and Conservation International, with support from a Steering Committee including the Marine Stewardship Council, Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, FishWise, UNEP FI, The Nature Conservancy, and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council.Companies across the seafood value chain can utilise the SBTN\u2019s methods via this registration link.<\/p>\n<p>The SBTN now has a suite of science-based targets for nature across freshwater, land, and ocean. Last October, the SBTN confirmed the first batch of corporates to set nature-based targets through the initiative. Luxury fashion and lifestyle group Kering, pharma giant GSK, and building materials producer Holcim all set verified science-based targets for nature. Kering has set targets for both freshwater and land use, while GSK and Holcim are focusing on freshwater only.<\/p>\n<p>That followed multiple rounds of pilots with dozens of corporates across various industries including finance, food and beverage, automotive, technology and textiles. Last year, the OECD published its annual report tracking progress in the field of international biodiversity finance.
