The Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy will be unveiled by the Department for Transport (DfT) today. It will set interim emissions targets on the road to net-zero by 2050, compelling vessel owners to reduce their emissions by 30% by 2030, and 80% by 2040, against a 2008 baseline. It is hoped that these targets will compel the owners and operators of the most polluting vessels to act first.<\/p>\n<p>The Maritime Decarbonisation Strategy is the successor to the 2019 Clean Maritime Plan, which was set out before the UK enshrined its 2050 net-zero target in law. MPs had repeatedly criticised the Government for failing to set out a comprehensive net-zero transition plan for shipping. While maritime emissions have declined by 30% since 1990, domestic and international shipping still accounted for 7.9% of total UK transport emissions in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The sector remains particularly difficult to decarbonise due to its international nature, high capital costs and uncertainty over which fuels and technologies will dominate in the long term.The Strategy comes ahead of the UN\u2019s third Ocean Conference, which will be held in France in June.
