Verra had initially given Danone the go-ahead to issue plastics credits related to its Indonesia projects under its Plastic Waste Reduction Programme.<\/p>\n<p>The investments were part of Danone\u2019s goal to cut its plastic footprint and meet a commitment to recover more plastic than it uses in the country by 2025; Danone AQUA is Indonesia\u2019s largest bottled water brand, and described by NGOs such as Sungai Watch as Bali\u2019s biggest polluter. The Bali project opened in September 2021, but was suspended last April following complaints from local residents that the facility, which included turning low-value plastic into refuse-derived fuel (RDF), had been built just metres from homes and without proper consultation.<\/p>\n<p>RDF is a mixture of waste that is typically left over after other rubbish has been recycled, and often contains up to 50% plastic. Yuyun Ismawati, co-chair of the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN), says when the plant began melting this scrap to form briquettes, the toxic smoke became unbearable, with local people unable to open their windows and several hospitalised.
