Launched late last year, the Taskforce comprises academics and experts from the fields of waste management and material innovation. It is chaired by former Ellen MacArthur Foundation CEO Andrew Morlet. Reed confirmed that the Taskforce has now identified the five priority sectors which its initial policy recommendations, which will inform the new Strategy, will cover: textiles, transport, construction, agri-food, chemicals and plastics.<\/p>\n<p>These sectors have been chosen because the economic opportunities of shifting to a circular economy within them are highest. Taskforce members also considered the potential to save the greatest levels of waste, reduce the most polluting waste streams and deliver the most significant reduction in emissions. Within each sector, the Taskforce will work with businesses to draw up a specific roadmap to \u201cimprove and reform\u201d its materials use. The Government has stated that an overarching Strategy, plus sector-specific plans, will \u201cgive businesses the certainty to plan and the confident to build and invest in new infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Reed said he wants this Government to deliver a \u201ctruly circular economy\u201d. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation\u2019s circular economy processes are designing out waste and pollution, keeping products and materials in circulation at their highest possible value, and restoring nature. Reed said: \u201cOur lives follow a \u2018take, use and throw\u2019 model that is economically unsustainable, creates mountains of waste that we have to bury or burn, and leaves our supply chains vulnerable and exposed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLess than 60% of waste electricals are collected for reuse or recycling. 4 in 5 of our plastic products are still made from virgin materials. Our household recycling rates haven\u2019t improved in 15 years. UK landfill sites absolutely astonishingly cover an area almost as big as Greater London. We burn 12 million tonnes of waste collected by councils every year. \u201cWe throw away \u00a322bn in edible food annually. \u00a34.5bn in clothes. \u00a32.5bn in usable furniture. This is bad for the environment, bad for society and it\u2019s bad for the economy. We are literally shovelling money down the drain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new Strategy will build on packaging and waste management changes announced in 2018 under the Resources and Waste Strategy (RWS). The RWS included measures including regular food waste collections for all homes in England, a UK-wide deposit return scheme for drinks packaging, and \u2018simpler recycling\u2019 reforms.
