The allegation stems from video footage from 2023 in which people wearing Veolia Group\u2019s uniform can be seen pumping untreated liquid pollutants, known as leachate, from its San Silvestre landfill in Barracanbermeja, Colombia, into nearby wetlands.<\/p>\n<p>The wetlands downstream of the landfill supply drinking water to approximately 200,000 people. They form part of the \u2018Jaguar Corridor\u2019, an international network of protected areas across Central and South America. According to Global Witness, independent tests conducted downstream after the dumping was witnessed detected \u201cdangerously high\u201d concentrations of heavy metals, including mercury at levels 25 times over the safe limit for aquatic life.<\/p>\n<p>This was measured against Canada\u2019s scientific guidelines for permissible limits of pollutants in sediment, given that Colombia does not have a legal framework for permissible limits of pollutants in sediment. Mercury has been linked to severe health conditions, including birth defects and developmental delays in young children.
