A total of 8,383 debris items were recorded across 1,907 surveys in the peer-reviewed paper published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin on Thursday. Researchers surveyed inland, riverine, and coastal habitats across a100km radius around Hobart, Newcastle, Perth, Port Augusta, Sunshine Coast and Alice Springs between 2022 and 2024. The study found on average debris density was 0.15 items per metre squared, with cigarettes butts and polystyrene fragments were the most common type of debris.<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, residential, commercial areas and roadways had the highest debris densities, while agricultural, industrial and natural parklands had the lowest. The paper cites a 2020 study that predicts the amount of plastic waste entering aquatic ecosystems to reach up to 53 million metric tonnes per year by 2030 without extraordinary global efforts to reduce pollution levels.
