Solar UK claims that \u00a33.5bn of the annual GVA would come from solar, while battery energy storage would contribute \u00a31.6bn. Together, the solar and battery storage sectors could contribute up to \u00a3698m to the public finances in 2035, through income tax, national insurance, VAT from employee expenditure, corporation tax and non-domestic rates.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Energy UK\u2019s director of policy and delivery Gemma Grimes said: \u201cGrowing renewable energy generation at pace, alongside the capacity to store it, is obviously of critical importance to meet the UK\u2019s climate change goals. But beyond being cheap, flexible and low-carbon, the effects of solar and battery energy storage on the economy have played little part in public discourse to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe report makes clear that the sectors are already a significant economic player, with their anticipated growth making them a massive stimulus within the next ten years.\u201d The report comes in the same week that the UK broke the record for the amount of electricity generated from solar in a 30-minute period. 12.2GW was generated between 12.30pm and 1pm on Tuesday (1 April).<\/p>\n<p>Solar Energy UK claims the levels of deployment it bases its claims on are feasible. At present, the UK\u2019s operational solar capacity is between 17 and 18GW, while around 5GW of batteries are online. Around half of the UK\u2019s solar is ground-mounted, and the remainder is split evenly between rooftop panels on homes and on large buildings like commercial warehouses. Solar UK anticipates this mix remaining similar through to 2035.<\/p>\n<p>The previous Conservative Government had set an ambition to grow the nation\u2019s solar stock to 70GW by 2035 at the advice of the Solar Taskforce. The current Labour administration, in support of its plans to all but phase-out fossil fuelled electricity generation by 2030, made a manifesto commitment to treble solar capacity this decade. It has not denounced the Tories\u2019 2035 target and has reconvened the Solar Taskforce.<\/p>\n<p>No time-bound, numerical target to grow battery storage was set under the Tories and Labour has not yet introduced one. However, MPs were told in January that Ministers are drawing up plans to tackle market barriers to large-scale energy storage projects. Experts are advising the Government on the creation of these plans.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Energy UK estimates that the solar and battery storage sectors generated \u00a31.9bn Gross Value Added (GVA) and supported 20,400 jobs in 2024. These jobs are mainly skilled and well-paid roles; the group claims that the average role in 2024 contributed almost \u00a390,000 in GVA, around 40% more than the UK average. Solar and battery businesses provided roles for workers across the entirety of the UK, opening opportunities for those outside of London. The south-west was the employment hotspot in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In 2035, Solar Energy UK estimates that the two industries could support more than 42,500 jobs. Scotland, the East of England and the Midlands stand to benefit most from new job creation. There is a range of different roles in these sectors, including domestic rooftop solar installers, specialist engineers, construction workers and maintenance practicioners. The report also highlights how solar arrays are supporting rural communities with diversified income. Last year, farmers earned some \u00a361m by selling solar power generated on their land and buildings.
