The survey, conducted by the SME Climate Hub, polled 471 SMEs from across 53 countries. It revealed that an increasing number of SMEs are taking positive action on climate change, spurred by customer demand, regulatory compliance and the need for financial resilience in the face of ecological uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p><em>SME survey<\/em><br \/>\nThe survey found that 61% of SMEs are taking climate action to meet customer expectations, an increase of 21 percentage points since 2024. A similar proportion, 58%, stated they were improving their sustainability profile to increase the competitiveness of their business, compared with 46% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>And just over half (51%) of businesses surveyed are motivated by attracting new customers, compared with 34% in 2024. A majority of SMEs surveyed are also factoring in risk management, with 58% of those interviewed stating that the impacts of climate change are a key motivator for improved sustainability.As well as physical climate risks, SMEs are striving to prepare for regulatory risks. Six in ten cite compliance with regulations as a reason to improve their climate work, up from 37% in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>These results contrast with another recent survey, released last week and conducted in the UK only, which asked 500 UK SMEs about their own sustainability plans. Here, 54% of SMEs questioned stated that they have deprioritised their green practices, with almost 10% having \u2018significantly\u2019 deprioritised them.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, some global challenges remain. In particular, finance and policy are seen as key barriers, with 80% of respondents reporting poor government support for climate action despite most nations having top-level emissions targets. Two-thirds of those surveyed suggested that increased government incentives, such as tax benefits or loans, would allow them to better scale their climate action.<\/p>\n<p>The SME Climate Hub\u2019s director, Pamela Jouven, said: \u201cSMEs aren\u2019t waiting for action\u2014they\u2019re leading it.
