These were some of the findings from new research conducted by hiring platform Indeed. Indeed polled more than 2,000 workers and 1,000 employers. While employees say they struggle to find jobs requiring sustainability skills in their region, employers are nonetheless struggling to fill the green jobs they had. According to the survey, more than a quarter of employers (27%) face skill shortages in recruiting for sustainability roles.<\/p>\n<p>These findings are consistent with other recent reports, including one from ManpowerGroup and Cepsa published in November last year. That report found that 70% of companies worldwide are looking for or planning to hire professionals with green skills, but 44% of employers struggle to find qualified workers, and 36% struggle to identify applicable existing skills.<\/p>\n<p>Separately last year, data from social network LinkedIn found demand for green skills is expected to double by 2050, outmatching supply and leading to a significant skills gap. Indeed\u2019s survey found that employers are working to reduce this gap, however, with 42% of those surveyed believing that better training could bridge the skill gap, an increase of 11 percentage points year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>Workers agreed, with more than half stating that more should be done to encourage young people into green careers at an educational level. This tallies with other findings of the report, which uncovered that 49% of jobseekers admitted they lacked the necessary skills or experience for the available roles, and 41% felt employers were not open enough to transferable skills.<\/p>\n<p>The success of candidates seeking to transition into green skills work has fallen since 2024, with only 22% succeeding. Ultimately, 27% of workers looking to enter green roles cited too few available positions as the key barrier to entry. A further 23% said that there were not enough local roles available to them.<\/p>\n<p>Sentiment around net-zero and green jobs remains positive, Indeed\u2019s survey found. Half of the 1,000 UK workers surveyed said a commitment to net-zero targets enhances a brand\u2019s reputation, with 44% agreeing the goals are \u2018good for business and contribute to growth and profitability. More than three-quarters of workers also said they felt net-zero commitments can help brands to attract and retain talent. This sentiment is directly impacting career values, with 44% of workers surveyed stating they prefer working in roles that positively impact the environment. Additionally, a quarter of workers (27%) said they would take a pay cut to work in a role that contributes to sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed\u2019s senior strategic advisor Matt Burney said: \u201cBridging the gap between motivated jobseekers and employers\u2019 perceived barriers to hiring will require investment in skills and greater awareness of transferable experience.
