The initiative will be delivered in partnership with European shipping and logistics firm DFDS and British firm Sunswap, which designs and manufactures the trailers. The new trailers will feature roof-mounted solar panels and an advanced battery system to power the refrigeration units. It will also showcase visuals and messaging referring to the trailer\u2019s solar powered refrigeration system, in a bid to create consumer awareness.<\/p>\n<p>They will mainly transport Birds Eye products from its production facility at Lowestoft, Suffolk, to its distribution hub in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. According to its 2022 Impact report, the primary sources of carbon-related emissions within Birds Eye\u2019s operations include freezers (26.9%), energy (23.5%), and logistics and warehousing for its finished goods (15.8%). The brand is expecting to eliminate nearly 24 tonnes of carbon emissions from its supply chain every year by using the new trailers.<\/p>\n<p>Birds Eye UK&amp;IE\u2019s general manager Shaun Smith said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be working with DFDS and Sunswap to help reduce the environmental impact of our operations.\u201cSunswap\u2019s proven electric technology enables us to maintain the highest standards of temperature-controlled transport while helping reduce our carbon emissions.\u201cIt\u2019s fitting that the technology we\u2019re now using to support the running of these trailers uses the same sun that ripens our peas to perfection in the field, keeping our products frozen at their peak as they start their journey to millions of UK homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Birds Eye, being a member of the UN\u2019s Race to Zero campaign, has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 at the latest. By the end of 2025, it is aiming to reduce its Scope 1 (direct), Scope 2 (energy-related) and Scope 3 (indirect) emissions per ton of product by 45% from its 2019 baseline. Sunswap\u2019s chief executive Michael Lowe said: \u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to partner with Birds Eye on this important initiative to help reduce emissions in the supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis collaboration with an industry food leader like Birds Eye confirms that our British-engineered and manufactured system not only matches the performance and reliability needed for temperature-critical food transport but goes further by reducing direct emissions and helping cut operating costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It has been estimated that food refrigeration currently accounts for up to 5% of global energy needs and 2.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. Several supermarkets, including Asda and Waitrose &amp; Partners, have previously installed technology, inspired by Formula 1, to reduce their refrigeration-based energy consumption.
