The UK\u2019s ETS approach is expected to be expanded from 2028 to apply to the waste sector and operators of Energy-from-Waste (EfW) sites currently used in the management of harder to recycle materials.<\/p>\n<p>Among the main features of the ETS is the imposition of limits on the amount of emissions a sector can produce. Participants are then provided free allowances of carbon emissions they can produce. This can can be traded as credits for organisations needing more or less of their emissions allowance. Over time, the cap is reduced to push down overall emissions. In a statement issued as part of what has been called the &#8217;first&#8217; UK-EU Summit negotiations underway this week, the prime minister praised the agreement\u2019s focus on linking the country\u2019s ETS approach with a neighbouring arrangement in Europe. He said the move was intended to improve the country\u2019s energy security.
