According to RedSeer\u2019s report, Consumer-led E-Waste Market Assessment, India generated 3.8 million tonnes of electronic waste in FY 24 \u2014 making it the third-largest e-waste producer worldwide, behind only China and the US.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this waste comes from households \u2013 roughly 70% of India\u2019s e-waste originates in homes \u2013 with large home appliances and temperature-exchange electronics (like refrigerators, air conditioners, and cooling equipment) driving the bulk of the growth. Weaving data from the RedSeer report with on-the-ground insights from industry leaders can help explain why India now leads in e-waste generation, how the nation can overcome the obstacles blocking its path to full recovery, and chart a realistic roadmap towards sustainable, inclusive recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, India formally recycles only 16% of its consumer e-waste today\u2014and even by FY 35, formal channels will capture just 40% unless we overhaul the system. The rest flows through informal networks (60\u201370%), accumulates unattended in homes (10\u201315%), or ends up in landfills (2\u20133%), poisoning environments and forfeiting economic value. Roughly, 70\u201375% of the embedded value (\u2248$700\u2013$800 million) slips through the cracks each year. According to the RedSeer report, an estimated $1.1 billion of metals is extracted per year, and formal plants recover only $330\u202fmillion while $770\u202fmillion remains untapped.
