It consisted of two tranches \u2013 a new 3-year line due on 5 October 2026 (under which \u20ac5 billion were issued) plus a tap of a 30-year bond due on March 2053 (under which \u20ac4 billion were raised).<\/p>\n<p>This Europe Day transaction was met with a strong interest from investors, who placed bids totalling \u20ac29 billion for the 3-year bond, and \u20ac59 billion for the 30-year tap. This equals oversubscription rates of nearly 6 times and nearly 15 times, respectively. The proceeds of this transaction will be used to support the NextGenerationEU recovery programme and the Macro-Financial Assistance+ programme for Ukraine, in line with the Commission&#8217;s approach of issuing single branded \u201cEU-Bonds\u201d rather than separately labelled bonds for individual programmes.<\/p>\n<p>European Commissioner for Budget, Johannes Hahn, who oversees EU borrowing, said: \u201cGreat to see a successful execution of this transaction in the day that celebrates peace and unity in Europe: our Europe Day. We continue to use the funds to support Europe&#8217;s priorities, building our greener, more digital and more resilient future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With today&#8217;s transaction, the Commission has completed 74% of its \u20ac80 billion funding target for the first half of 2023. Out of the \u20ac80 billion funding target, some \u20ac70 billion will be directed to the NextGenerationEU recovery programme, and around \u20ac10 billion to the Macro-Financial Assistance+ programme for Ukraine.
