The warming effect of the North Atlantic Drift (originating in the Gulf Stream) ,makes it possible for vegetation such as this to survive here on Arran&#8217;s west coast. The Gulf Stream system is a major tipping element in the planet\u2019s climate system, and a shutdown of this current would have catastrophic climate impacts.<\/p>\n<p>Called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) by scientists, the Gulf Stream is s a warm and swift Atlantic Ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico and flows through the Straits of Florida and up the eastern coastline of the United States then veers east near 36 latitude (North Carolina) and moves toward Northwest Europe where it becomes the North Atlantic Current. The AMOC influences the climate of the coastal areas of the east coast of the United States from Florida to southeast Virginia, and to an even greater degree, the climate of Northwest Europe.<\/p>\n<p>One of the earliest studies signaling a slowing of the AMOC was done in 2018, with the research being led by University College London (UCL) and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. \u201cThe AMOC has declined in strength by 15 percent since the mid-20th century to a \u201cnew record low,\u201d the scientists concluded in a peer-reviewed study published in the journal Nature in April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>A second study published in the journal Nature on April 11, 2018, led by Levke Ceasar and Stefan Rahmstorf from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, used climate model data and past sea-surface temperatures to reveal that AMOC has been weakening more rapidly since 1950 due to climate change.<\/p>\n<p>A study in August 2021 probably gave the direst warning about the Gulf Stream, though. The study is part of the European TiPES project, coordinated by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The study, in Nature Climate Change, suggests the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) may have been losing stability in the course of the last century. The study published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications suggests that continued warming will push the AMOC over its \u201ctipping point\u201d around the middle of this century.<\/p>\n<p>This study used sea surface temperature data stretching back to 1870 as a proxy for the change in the strength of AMOC currents over time. The analysis is also based on greenhouse gas emissions rising as they have done to date. This study suggests the shift would be as abrupt and irreversible as turning off a light switch, and it could lead to dramatic changes in weather on either side of the Atlantic. \u201cThis is a really worrying result,\u201d said Peter Ditlevsen, a climate physicist at the University of Copenhagen and lead author of the new study. \u201cThis is really showing we need a hard foot on the brake\u201d of greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A total collapse of the AMOC would have disastrous consequences around the world, severely disrupting the rains that billions of people depend on for food in India, South America, and West Africa. It would increase storms and drop temperatures in Europe, and lead to a rising sea level on the eastern coast of North America.
