This decision came via a meeting of the French parliament during July 2023. The outcome has raised concerns among people concerned with data privacy. Under the bill, electronic devices could potentially be remotely activated to record sound and images of people suspected of terror offences, as well as other offences included delinquency and organised crime.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Morning Star, critics of the measures have warned that the provision would inevitably lead to abuses of power by French police. The paper notes that the police in France have faced allegations of misuse of authority and brutality. Supporters of President Emmanuel Macron have stated that such remote spying will be limited to \u201cwhen justified by the nature and seriousness of the crime\u201d and \u201cfor a strictly proportional duration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What does this legislative change mean for privacy issues? What should be the balance between the private individual and the state? In light of this story, the company Comparitech has updated its Police Spying Powers: 50 countries ranked on powers to access mobile devices study to reflect this development.\u00a0Commenting on this development, Rebecca Moody, Head of Data Research at Comparitech, tells Digital Journal: \u201cOur investigation into just what access police have to mobile phones demonstrates a worrying and growing trend of remote surveillance and often warrantless stop and search powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Expanding on this concern, Moody adds: \u201cFrance\u2019s latest bill, which could give police the ability to remotely turn on suspects\u2019 cameras, microphones, and GPS, highlights how security agencies around the world are being given more power to snoop on citizens before a crime is committed and with little or no regard for any innocent parties involved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moody is worried about developments occurring in many nations when it comes to digital technology. She notes: \u201cOut of the 50 countries we study, all of them give police some rights to access mobile phones, whether by physically searching them or remotely hacking them.
