It also has a thriving climate tech industry, drawn by the country&#8217;s plentiful hydroelectricity and geothermal energy. But the land of ice and fire has a dirty secret: it has one of the lowest recycling rates among OECD countries, at 17%. And only a fraction of waste is handled in Iceland, with 95% of plastic waste exported to Scandinavia and the Netherlands, with some of it also making its way to Asia.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a situation that technology company Pure North, the island&#8217;s only recycling facility, is seeking to change, with the help of income from selling credits in the nascent plastic waste credit market. If it succeeds in the process of getting its technology validated, the company believes the credits could be worth 500-800 euros per tonne of avoided plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p>Pure North\u2019s chemical-free mechanical recycling technology uses waste heat and steam from the country\u2019s plentiful geothermal energy to turn six types of plastic waste into new polymers.
