However, the Group yesterday announced it had reached a new agreement with Hybrid Air Vehicles to reserve 10 more of the inovative aircraft, as it seeks to expand the Airlander network from Spain into the Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n<p>With the first Airlander 10 services planned within five years, additional potential routes for the Airlander aircraft were recently presented by leaders from both Mel Air and UK-based Hybrid Air Vehicles to Transport Malta. The companies said the air ships had the potential to operate on routes from Malta to the Maltese island of Gozo, Sicily, and other key links with Italy, Tunisia, and Libya.<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of the latest deal, Air Nostrum has also joined the Airlander 50 Development Partner Programme, becoming the first commercial airline to collaborate on plans to roll out low-emissions airships capable of moving 50-tonne payloads. Miguel \u00c1ngel Falc\u00f3n, chairman of Mel Air and vice president of Air Nostrum, said the reservation of a further Airlander aircraft was motivated by the promise of very low fuel consumption and the environmental and cost benefits on offer from the technology, as well as the operational versatility offered by aircraft that could take-off and land on land and water. &#8220;These are just some critical factors that make the Airlander an excellent aircraft for regional flights,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes just months after Hybrid Air Vehicles and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority announced a \u00a37m investment in plans to produce Airlander 10 aircraft in Doncaster &#8211; a move the company claims will create over 1,200 highly skilled jobs and new supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Hybrid Air Vehicles, whose craft are expected to generate 90 per cent fewer emissions than conventional aircraft by using electric and fuel-burning engines alongside a helium hull to provide buoyant lift, claims the Airlander 10&#8217;s ability to both land on and take off vertically from grass fields and water makes the craft suitable for a wide range of roles, including cargo, surveillance, regional transport, and VIP travel.<\/p>\n<p>Its first three production slots have already been reserved for unnamed luxury tourism operators, the company said. Tom Grundy, CEO of Hybrid Air Vehicles, said the firm&#8217;s growing partnership with Air Nostrum Group continues to highlight the huge potential to low carbon flight. &#8220;Airlander is designed to deliver a better future for commercially appealing and truly sustainable aviation services, by enabling new transport services and better growth options for our customers,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Airlander 10 will make this possible by 2027, and Airlander 50 will build on it.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes barely a week after a number of leading multinationals including Salesforce, Deloitte, and Breakthrough Energy joined forces to launch a new challenge calling on entrepreneurs to submit innovative solutions to slash emissions from the global aviation industry.
