The United Nations&#8217; High Seas Treaty is designed to extend environmental protections to oceans not officially owned by any country. Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong announced Australia had signed on at the UN General Assembly in New York. She said Australia was working to bring the treaty &#8220;into force as soon as possible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, officially the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Treaty, was reached in March after a 36-hour final negotiation.
