The Action Plan aims to ensure electricity grids are deployed faster and digitalised to accelerate the transition to renewables. Across the EU, \u201cwaiting time for permits for grid reinforcements are between 4-10 years, and 8-10 years for high voltages,\u201d the Commission said in its new plan.<\/p>\n<p>Probably the biggest challenge relates to Europe\u2019s ageing local distribution grids, which are coming under increased pressure due to growing numbers of households connecting electric vehicles, heat pumps, and solar panels to the grid. In total, the Commission estimates that \u20ac584 billion in investments will be necessary for electricity grids by 2030, with the majority going into local distribution networks to make them \u201cdigital, monitored in real-time, remotely controllable and cybersecure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Eurelectric, the EU\u2019s power industry association, welcomed the Commission\u2019s plan as \u201can excellent first step\u201d in improving Europe\u2019s electricity grids. In addition, Eurelectric called for \u201cconcrete guidelines\u201d to clarify how the EU can ease funding access for grid projects at the distribution level.
