The overwhelming majority of publicly-listed oil and gas companies worldwide are still failing to build credible strategies in line with avoiding global warming in excess of 1.5C, both in the short and long-term.\u00a0That is the sobering conclusion of a fresh analysis published today by the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) Centre, which estimates just a tiny fraction &#8211; two per cent &#8211; of oil and gas business strategies and capital investment plans are aligned with limiting global average temperature increases to 1.5C by the end of the century, as set out in the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The TPI Centre, which is based at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), carried out an assessment of how 131 publicly-listed oil, gas, and electricity companies are planning to transition to a low carbon economy, and assessed their plans against a decarbonisation pathway aligned with 1.5C of global warming. Just 11 per cent of the firms were found to have capital investment plans aligned with the 1.5C global average temperature threshold through to 2025, 2035, and 2050.<\/p>\n<p>However, the proportion was even lower when the analysis was limited to the 52 oil and gas companies assessed, with the research finding that only two per cent of these firms have 1.5C-aligned capital investment plans in place for 2025, 2035, and 2050. Drilling down further into the oil and gas sector, the analysis that 93 per cent of these firms have no commitments in place to phase out future investment in carbon-intensive assets or products, while none at all have set clear, time-bound targets for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, 92 per cent of oil and gas companies analysed do not quantify key elements of their emissions-reduction strategy, and 96 per cent do not clarify the role played by carbon offsetting and negative emissions technologies in their climate strategies, it found. As a whole, the sector was found to be the second-least-aligned economic sector assessed after food, according to the TPI Centre. The study looked at 11 sectors in total, which found the electricity sector to be among the third-most aligned with a 1.5C warming pathway, just behind diversified mining and shipping.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity firms such as E.ON, SSE, and Meridian Energy have all put plans in place plans that align with the 1.5C goal in the short, medium and long-term, whereas the likes of Shell and Total Energies have been accused of weakening their short term emissions goals this year.
